Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar 1 vanilla bean, halved with scraped seeds 5 plums, quartered, pitted 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 1/2 cups small ice cubes

Directions

Put 4 cups water, sugar, and halved vanilla bean with scraped seeds into a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Add plums. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until plums are tender, about 15 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer plums to a plate to cool completely; remove bean, and discard poaching liquid.

Puree cooled plums in a blender. Add buttermilk and small ice cubes; blend until smooth.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 07/12/2010 Sorry ladies but it is not 4 cups of sugar....it is 2 cups...which still is quite a bit but you are misreading the quanity of sugar.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 07/11/2010 Well if I were to rate this I would have to give it an F, obviously there are no negative ratings. I can't imagine why they would post a BREAKFAST smoothie that requires 4 cups of sugar, regardless if weather or not it is for poaching.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 07/11/2010 If I am reading the recipe correctly, the sugar is added to the poaching liquid, which is discarded after the plums have been poached. This probably keeps the plums' sugar from leaching into the poaching liquid, keeping them nice and naturally sweet. If you can find ripe plums, I can't imagine any additional sweetener would be necessary, but I will use organic sugar all the same for poaching. This sounds delicious!

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 07/11/2010 I agree with Linda. A tablespoon of agave would do it 4 me. but sounds interesting. I might try it with a few tweeks

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 07/11/2010 1/3 to 1/2 a cup of sugar in a breakfast drink?? Not my idea of a nutritious start to the day!
