Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups dry red wine 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons packed dark-brown sugar 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons finely grated fresh ginger 1 garlic clove, minced 8 chicken drumsticks, skin on Coarse salt Green-Cabbage Coleslaw with Vinaigrette

Directions

Bring wine, sugar, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat, and simmer until mixture has thickened to the consistency of honey, 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool.

Using a sharp knife, make three diagonal slashes through the skin and flesh on both sides of each drumstick (this will help the flavors permeate the meat).

Preheat grill to medium-low. (If you are using a charcoal grill, coals are ready when you can hold your hand 5 inches above grill for just 7 seconds.) Place drumsticks on grill, and brush with sauce. Close cover, and grill 4 minutes. Flip chicken, and brush with sauce. Continue to cook, flipping and brushing with sauce every 4 to 5 minutes, until cooked through, about 20 minutes total. Season with salt. Serve with coleslaw.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 07/22/2011 I loooooooooovvvvvvvvveeeeee this recipe I used boneless chciken breast and it was FABULOUS, The sauce reminds me of the Jack Daniels sace at TGI Firdays.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 05/09/2010 this was SO good and SO easy! the dusting of kosher salt made it over the top... great party food for a crowd- very versatile flavor, would work as well with potato salad as it would with a stir fry on the side.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 07/15/2009 Great combination of sweet and salty with a kick. Also works *great* as a marinade for chicken breasts. If you aren't a fan of strong ginger taste, half the ginger, and double the garlic.

Martha Stewart Member Rating: Unrated 03/09/2008 I haven't used our grill to cook chicken very often but this looks like an easy recipe. Right now, it's winter in Minneapolis, Minnesota so I'll have to wait until early Spring to get out the barbecue and try this recipe. The barbecue sauce and glazing sound delicious and I do love coleslaw and I'll try my own recipe for the coleslaw. Kentucky Fried Chicken is my favorite coleslaw so I'll try to duplicate that in my coleslaw recipe for the side dish for the Sweet and Sticky Drumsticks.
