                My grandmother made these date/nut bars every Christmas. But she used orange juice instead of water. And only 1 tsp. real lemon juice from the bottle. Try it, it really makes these bars stand out.

                Happy to see this.....in India they use date paste to make Date Ghari,  which are  little chapathys stuffed with date paste;  flavored with rosewater,  served for afternoon tea.  The only problem is that they use much ghee and sugar in the recipe.  I like this better.  Thank you and your mom (sniff !!!) ever so much

  • 2 cups dates, pitted and diced
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon

Directions

Place dates in a saucepan with water, salt, and lemon zest and juice. Cook over medium heat until dates are soft, about 12 minutes. Remove from heat; let cool before using.
