Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, deveined, and finely chopped
  • 4 medium garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup, plus more for serving
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked or canned black beans, drained
  • 1 cup cooked basmati rice
  • 2 cups fresh breadcrumbs
  • Hot sauce, such as Tabasco
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Directions

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add onion, red pepper, and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until soft and onions are translucent, about 8 minutes. Add cumin, turmeric, and ketchup. Cook for 1 minute.

In the bowl of a food processor, combine onion mixture, beans, and rice. Process until well combined. Transfer to a large bowl. Add breadcrumbs, and mix well. Season with salt, pepper, and hot pepper sauce.

Heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat in a large nonstick skillet. Drop 1/4-cup balls of bean mixture into skillet. Flatten into 3-inch patties. Cook until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Repeat process with remaining 2 tablespoons oil and bean mixture. Serve immediately with ketchup, if desired.

I made this alot and all my friends love it!. I saw a video of her and Sarah Carey making it on the Family Dinners DVD. I don't think I have EVER used Basmati rice so I wouldn't worry about it. In the video they say you can use any type. I use leftover rice alot. I am not a vegetarian either but I eat this when I want to cut back. In the video they said to be careful not to overmix.

Look I've done alot of really beautiful recipes from Martha, but I have to say this is the worst bean burger I have ever tasted. I served it to some friends and we all agreed, awful. What were you thinking when you posted this horrible burger. It's terrible. Don't even bother to make this, it's a waste of good beans and bread crumbs.

I cook brown rice almost every day, just for my three pups, so I always have it and black beans as well. Oh yeah, I use wheat germ instead of bread crumbs, because wheat germ just tastes so much better to me.

I am not a vegetarian, so I use an egg in mine, but why would anyone use non sticky rice in something you need to have stick together? I only use natural brown rice for such as this and I want it very sticky.

Basmati is a longer grain, non-sticky rice with a nice aroma when cooking. It comes in white or brown.
My guess is that a cup of any cooked long grain would be a fine substitute, since it is ground in the food processor with the beans. :)
